Blog: “Are you a Person God can use?” by Sister Roseanne Perez
Type of Fast: No sugar, white flour, rice, or potatoes
Target: Music ministry and worship singers
As I take a look on today’s society, I am intrigued about the possibilities of how the Lord will bring about a major overhaul on both the church and in our personal lives. When we look into God’s word, we can see that there were many different men and women that God used to influence a generation in a time when chaos and the spirit of religion infultrated a nation. As in the time of Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicles 20) we read how God brought about a great victory against “A vast army” that would try to destroy Jehoshaphat and all of Judah and their accomplishments. But unlike many other Kings, Jehoshaphat did not rely on the capabilities of his army nor did he rely on man power or religion. However, Jehoshaphat was a man of deep conviction and reverance to God.
He stood for true worship, sustaining character and a healthy set of morals as the foundation of his reign as King.
Jehoshaphat , whose name means “Yahweh judges”, teaches us a lesson on how to handle adversity even when it is coming at us from every side. When pressured to make an executive decision against the Moabites and Ammonites.
2 Chronicles 20: 1,3 Jehoshaphat was alarmed resolved to inquire of the lord and he proclaimed a fast for all judah the people of judah came together to seek help from the Lord , indeed they came from every town in judah to seek him.
Jehoshaphat was a man that
1) Intercession before God
2) That fasting made Jehoshaphat sincitive to the Spirit of the Lord(2 Chronicles 20: 14
when the nation was faced with disaster Jehoshaphat called upon the people to get serious with god by going without food( fasting) for a designated time, by separating themselves from the daily routine of food preparation and eating they could devote that extra time to considering their sin and praying to god for help.
Fasting Can Be Part Of Repentance
( 2 Chronicles 7: 14,15)
If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways (Repent) then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land ( Heart) now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place.
Fasting Needs To Be Done For The Right Reasons
Fasting in order to spend time in prayer is Noble and Difficult. It give us time to pray, teaches self-discipline, reminds us that we can live with a lot less and helps us appreciate God’s Gifts, Jesus was not condemning fasting, but Hypocrisy fasting in order to Gain Public approval. Fasting was mandatory for the Jewish people once a year, on The Day Of Atonement ( Leviticus 23: 26-32) The pharisees voluntarily fasted twice a week to impress the people with their holiness Jesus commended acts of self sacrifice done quielty and sincerely he wanted people to adopt spiritual disciplines for the right reasons not from a selfish desire for praise.
Matthew 6: 16-18
When you fast do not look somber as the hypocrites do for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting I tell you the truth they have received their reward in full but when you fast put oil on your head and wash your face so that it will not be obvious to men that you are Fasting but only to your Father , who is unseen and your Father who sees what is Done in Secret Will Reward YOU.
