Blog: “Earnest Prayer with Focus” by Julian Rivera
Type of Fast: Daniel Fast
Target: Fruitfulness in our lives and ministries
And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground .
Earnest prayer comes from the heart; it’s sincere, focused and real. It’s not about impressing others and putting on a big show of spirituality. But what’s in the heart will come out in our expressions and our actions.
Jesus gives us a vivid example in this Scripture. As he prayed in the garden. Before hewas betrayed., his prayer was so earnest. And intence that his sweat became like grape drops of blood falling down to the ground. That probably Wont happen in your life, but it reveals to us the incredible focus and depth of Jesus prayer.
Jesus also offered two parables that shows us earnestness in bringing a request or need before God. The Bible says in Luke 18 :1-8 he talks aboilut a widow who is preaisrltant in asking justice from a judge. She didn’t give up her “prayer” was specific and focused and from the heart. She didn’t take it lightly, she was focused.
Then Jesus goes on the describe two men in the temple and theidr contrasting prayers. The Bible says in Luke 18:9-14 its is a warning about trusting in our own good works, we also see earnest prayer from a sinfully man. But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to are heaven, but beat his breast, saying, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” (Luke 18:13) if you saw him you could hear his prayer u could tell his prayer is real.
You can find Many other prayers in the Bible that are earnest and sincere, like the women with the issue of blood. But they’re also prayers that are focused, actively seeking Gods. Will confident that he will answer.
It is easy to dash off quick prayers or a long list of needs or even address God with a glib attitude that says, ” God if u listening, woulnd you mind….?” Guts not earnest and effective prayer. Take a look at these verses and jot down the characteristics your prayershpuld have.
Were also warmed about what prayer is not to be like Mathew 6:5-8 and Mark 12:38-40
Q: Which discriptions fits ur actual prayer?
Q; What’s missing from prayer in your life?
Q: What’s the outward evidence of your inner prayer life?
Respond to focus: One of the biggest challenges to earnest prayer isn’t time but its focus. You probably had those moments when your mind drifts from one tying to another and soon your planning next week instead of praying for today. It takes discipline for earnest prayer and focus.
Start small, what’s the one thing you really need to bring before God today? Use a set time to pray about that one thing, even if its just two or three minutes. Set a timer or a clock to remind you, what is going to distract you? The phone, your own thoughts, turn off what you need to, close the door. Jot down those thoughts so there out of the way then focus your attention on God. God bless you
